Echoes of the Wild is an evening of contemporary classical music that explores the expressive depth of the saxophone through six works inspired by humanity's profound connection with nature. From intimate personal reflections to urgent environmental calls, this program weaves together themes of loss, renewal, memory, and transformation– taking the audience on a journey through landscapes both external and internal. From Colorado mountain peaks to Michigan farmlands the saxophone's rich palette captures delicate contemplation and raw emotional power. Each composer uses the natural world as a lens to examine our deepest human experiences: grief, wonder, determination, healing, and the fragility of both our environment and ourselves.
At the heart of the program is a shared message with Ruth Morgan’s Requiem: The Remains of the Day—a message of respect for and preservation of nature. Growing up in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, saxophonist Jessica Dodge-Overstreet experienced the beauty of the American West firsthand. Having explored the mountains, rivers, and caves of NV, CA, OR, and AZ, she feels deeply connected to the wilderness that surrounds us. These feelings of awe and admiration coupled with the motivation to preserve our natural world are echoed through the music she performs.
